The hamlet of Clonfinlough (misspelled "ClonfAnlough" in Google Maps' database!) is just a skip and a jog south of the R444 road in northernmost County Offaly. The R444 in that area skirts the River Shannon's south bank between it and a snaking esker hill, and Clonfinlough is atop the esker. The esker itself is not very high -- perhaps a couple of hundred feet at most -- but the surrounding plains of the Irish midlands are so flat that its crest affords an impressive view. Here we're looking along the main road --really -- through central Clonfinlough near the new church. |
