Portumna Castle, built in the first two decades of the 17th century, was destroyed by fire in 1826, leaving only the stone walls.  It is currently undergoing painstaking, decades-long restoration under the direction of the Irish Office of Public Works.  As of 2010, only the ground floor and roof had been completed.
