The car is our Hertz rent-a-Chevy. Irish license plate numbers follow a logical
code: the first two digits are the year of first registration; the letter or
letters following that are a code for the county of registration. In this case,
"LH" is the code for County Louth.
A measure of Ireland's decade-plus of new affluence is that we saw virtually no
license plates with the first two digits being earlier than "98".
